Did you know that cinema was born in Europe? And that Amsterdam has an architectural masterpiece of a museum to show you how this all evolved? And that it contains a cinema, library, museum, bar and restaurant? We didn't either, but let us introduce you to EYE, a must see harbor for film lovers. Guided by a local on our first day we went by the parks, Amsterdam has so many parks it’s incredible! It has some strange rules about drinking alcohol in these parks. Sometimes you can only drink at certain hours in close distance from certain monuments, it's unique, but we like to call this the culture of Amsterdam. On the other hand trash flew in our faces, a mentally ill guy threw his half eaten chicken bones to us in the public transport and we almost didn’t find a place to sit outside to get a drink in the sun, because it was so crowded! At that moment we saw an amazing futuristic building in the lake that washed away the horrible marginal side of Adam and we felt we had to go there! We took the free ferry and in less then 3 minutes we were standing at an eye-shaped building which was conveniently called ‘EYE’! When we entered we discovered it is a beacon of information about movies and the rise of cinema. We suspect the name originates from the fact that we ‘look’ at cinema, using our ‘eyes’. The building is a stunning piece of architecture and it contains even more interesting inside! Eye stands for innovation and it presents film as the newest, most dynamic, and most multidisciplinary of all art forms. They organize four exhibitions per year, and they all focus on important cinematic artists. There is also a free and permanent exhibition with a sober layout but very clear, with an interesting look on the history of film. It’s called the Panorama and it’s collection display film devices that mark significant moments in the history of cinema. For example, the original camera from the first Star Wars movie is exhibited here! You can make your own comic, and see with your own eyes how a green screen works. Not only do they tell you about the past, they make statements about the future. For example, they let you think about the idea that everyone is considered to be a film maker now, because we all have high quality camera’s on our phones and we all make movies these days. It’s an interesting point of view. Eye stands for fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions, interactive video tours, a great restaurant with an astonishing view, and a wide range of special programmes, festivals and film events. It has multiple cinema rooms inside and a fim-related library which is freely available for everyone. For film fanatics all over the world this is the place to be! We were impressed by the free and permanent exhibitions about the rise of cinema and artists within, and we are sure you will be too! This is a must see in Amsterdam for everyone because we live in a time we can't imagine without camera's. Right now there is a film programme that shows you the comedies of Woody Allen. Be ready to discover the world of cinema!

To launch our website we have the honor to interview Gabriel moreno, a Spanish professional illustrator graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Sevilla. He is one of the most successful and known international artists, working for great agencies and publications like Armani, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Vodka-Cruiser, Nike, Fiat and so on! He always identified himself as an artist, but we can say that his international career took off when he was discovered by the London-based magazine Computer Arts in 2007. He was chosen as one of the year’s 20 new talents of illustration. Gabriel uses different kinds of styles and techniques to make his artworks. From digital illustrating, to drawing to painting with watercolor... he combines every medium with every other thinkable medium. He is playful and clearly has a lot of fantasy. According to us his biggest strength is being creative not only in the result of the image, but also in the way he builds up his art. His personal work consist mostly of a Psychedelic background highlighting and contouring sensuous multi-layered female figures. His style can be described as playful dreamlike portraits with high contrast colors. Wonder is a big central element, because within the artworks of Gabriel there is just so much to discover. It's surprising time and time again if you take a look at the same work, you notice something new. The details of the drawings, it's allmost like the thoughts of these women are written on their body's, and you can feel the stream of emotions flowing through when you look at them. (right) An Example of his Fiat publication (middle) A personal work in the middle (left) An article in Illustration Now! shows his career is doing well. INTERVIEW WITH GABRIEL MORENO pARTs:: Dear Gabriel, thank you for joining us for this interview! My very first question to you: when did you decided to make art your profession? Gabriel Moreno: "It has not been a decision, it has always been inside of me. I remember myself at school drawing on the tables…" pARTs:: You were selected by London-based magazine ‘Computer Arts’ as one of the year’s 20 new talents of illustration in 2007. Could you say this was the beginning of your professional career as an artist? Gabriel Moreno: "I am not sure that I can say it was the beginning, but it was a huge impulse, and I am very grateful for it." pARTs:: You seem to combine the business side of art fluently with the creative side. Could you tell us something more about this aspect of your work? Gabriel Moreno: "There is just one difference between my work for advertisement and my personal artistic work: the freedom of choosing what I draw. But the style it’s exactly the same." pARTs:: The last few years you are successfully developing your personal line of art centered around the beauty of women. What does this character means to you? Gabriel Moreno: "I have to say it is the female body in rhythm with its gestures, the curvature of their necks, their mouths. I simply enjoy looking at a woman and drawing her. From that moment she can become as profound or superficial as she turns out to be." pARTs:: Who or what are you inspired by? Gabriel Moreno: "I suppose that which inspired me was my own interest in creating which in turn more than likely spurred from my Mother´s talent in the field. It started as a young boy and never stopped developing. Although along the way my teachers tried to inhibit my interests by taking away one of my favorite platforms on which to manifest my drawings. I approach my work with the intention of best representing the subjects to be portrayed but also doing so in accordance with my specific drawing style. I search out the dynamics that most aid in the development of that particular work both for the subject and for what most suits my vision of the finished work." pARTs:: You are an illustrator, engraver and painter. You use multiple artistic mediums and tools, but what is your favorite? Gabriel Moreno: "Without doubt: pencil." pARTs:: Is there a kind of style you would like to learn? Or a kind of material you would like to work with in the future? Gabriel Moreno: "I am starting using oil painting… it’s amazing, another point of view." pARTs:: Could you tell us more about what you are working on now? Exhibitions, new projects etc. Gabriel Moreno: "I am preparing artworks for different international fairs: Hong Kong, London and Singapore. I have a solo exhibition in June in Venice and I am involved in a few advertisement projects. But to be honest, the most exciting for me will be the launch of my first book: it will be published in next spring 2016." pARTs:: Do you have a favorite project? Gabriel Moreno: "I could not tell you… there are many… maybe the cover of Los Angeles Times." pARTs:: Why? Gabriel Moreno: "Because it represented a big change in my career… " pARTs:: What would be your dream project? or with who? Gabriel Moreno: I would like to start doing sculpture, my own fashion brand… there are many! pARTs:: what is the goal of your art? Gabriel Moreno: "That people could feel emotions, like if the figures of my works were real…" pARTs:: What does being an artist mean to you? Gabriel Moreno: "Everything... Because it's all I am." pARTs:: Gabriel, thank you very much for taking the time with us! We are looking forward to see what the first book has become! We can't wait untill it's 2016! |
